Spinach and Avocado Green Breakfast Smoothie

This speedy, nutritious smoothie is perfect for a quick breakfast. Great if you’re short on time, all you need to do is add the ingredients to a blender. The recipe is easily adaptable, you can add more leafy greens if you prefer or even some nut butter or berries.

Which milk is best?

This smoothie works with any milk, I have tried it with both soya milk and almond milk and both produced a lovely, creamy green smoothie. I prefer to use unsweetened milks with no refined sugar as the banana gives the smoothie plenty sweetness.

What is flaxseed?

Flaxseed, also known as linseed, is high in plant-based Omega 3 and a good source of protein and fibre. You can buy whole or milled/ground flaxseed. For this smoothie, I recommend using cold-milled flaxseed if you can get hold of it. Cold-milled flaxseed preserves nutrients and aids easy absorption after consumption. You can find flaxseed in most large supermarkets, usually beside nuts and seeds or health foods. It’s also available in health food shops and online. It may sometimes be labelled as “linseed”.

Will I still be hungry after this green smoothie?

This smoothie is perfect for breakfast as it has oats as a key ingredient to help keep you feeling full. Oats are a good source of fibre and also have a range of minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. This smoothie should hopefully set you up well for the morning.

Can I add anything else?

This green smoothie is very versatile, you can easily add more spinach or other greens. Maple syrup or agave can be added for more sweetness, if preferred, or a couple of pitted dates. Nut butter is a great addition to this breakfast smoothie.

  • 300 ml plant milk
  • 1 small avocado chopped (around 100g)
  • 1 small banana chopped (around 50g)
  • 25 g/large handful of spinach
  • 25 g oats
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed


  • Add all of the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth
